You CAN reach out to others – Don’t be shy!

A colleague said his 11 year-old daughter was coming to live with him after two years away with her Mom. She had fallen behind two or more grade levels in reading and math while being home-schooled. He loved his daughter and was speaking about his hopefulness that she could get back on track under his parentage. I thought to myself: “this is it. This is the opportunity right here. I can reach out.”

I told the Dad I’d be happy to tutor his daughter, for free of course, say, twice a week. There was also hot chocolate and trips to the library involved, if you get my drift. Now a year later her grades are better, but more than that, she is attached to the community, and knows she is part of a network. I daresay the Dad feels that, too.
