A few years ago I suffered what we all go through at some point in our lives: immense heartbreak. Having nowhere to live and nowhere to turn, I didn’t know what to do. Out of the kindness of their hearts, friends took me in on couches until one day my new boss of only two months and his family extended their home for a 6 week stay over the holidays. They barely knew me but were willing to have me stay in their condo with their whole family rent-free. Having a place to live filled with little ones, laughter, Christmas decorations, and music was the best medicine I could ever receive.
Over the years we have remained steadfast friends. Two years ago they made a big move away from California in a leap of faith to pursue a calling in their lives. This left them with little money and barely able to survive every month. Thankfully doing much better myself I was able to hide a check in a box of cookies I sent them for the Holidays that year. I wrote a letter with it to explain that it wasn’t much, but it was a small bit to repay what act of kindness they had done for me so many years before.
I truly believe these actions are what make humanity hopeful, and that love and unselfish kindness can begin to heal this world.
